Anasazi Path of the Butterfly Canteen Replication
The movement of the butterfly in flight is the path that the soul takes as it moves from the physical mortal world into the eternal spiritual realm. The solid black motifs on this canteen are the double triangular shape of the butterfly. The solid white background negative space represents the movement of flight of the butterfly; the path a spirit takes through eternity. The canteen has no handles which makes it less functional as an apparatus to carry water, but rather probably was designed to reside at the side of a dying member of the tribe. The vessel is hand constructed, delicately painted, and wood fired in a dirt pit which lends to its authentic appearance that only these primitive processes can obtain. High in the White Mountains of Arizona, Starling Black Studio recreates replications of original artifacts. None of our vessels are perfectly symmetrical and their surfaces are not smooth or shinny; they are abraded, fumed, stained, and a smoky patina with rich fire clouds adorn their surface. They do not look new, but rather quite old. No two are alike. If you love archeology and have an appreciation for the raw look of artifacts, then I believe you will agree that "Flutterby Canteen" is absolutely an exquisite piece of art that reflects the beautiful art once made by the hands and spirit of the Anasazi. Thank you for looking.
